Shozu - mobile phone to flickr goodness

Have been testing Shozu out on my W800i

what a brilliant idea!

I had seen it implemented on a series 60 Nokia and wanted to try it my self.

  • So you go to Shozu’s site
  • Register, its very quick
  • Choose which photo sharing site you want to send your images to (i choose my Flickr)
  • Give Shozu permission to talk to your sharing site via their API
  • Save all your settings
  • Download and install their app on to your phone (more about this below)!
  • Take some photos
  • Add tags, descriptions, titles etc (if you want)
  • Hit send
  • See them on your photo sharing site…

(It works with Flickr, Buzznet, Webshots and TextAmerica)

(Also a list of supported handsets is here)

Ok so now on to problems:

You need to be really careful to make sure that your mobile internet APN is configured correctly, as even the default out of the box settings for my W800i on Vodafone (UK) did not work, in the end I had to use the mobile phone configurator on Sony Ericsson’s site to set myself up a mobile email APN and that did the trick.

Once this is done I needed to configure Java internet access to use this new APN …

Another typical problem on my particular set up is having to make sure that the application can contact the internet with out asking every time.

Next on sending I have not yet found a way to rotate the image where necessary, so it uses the native format (landscape or portrait) that your phone uses, and sends it to flckr (or other) like that, which means, you may have to rotate the image once it is on your photo sharing site.

finally having seen it used on a series 60 phone the other day, I am slightly disapointed that it does not work the same way on the Sony Ericsson W800i, on the Nokia it worked slightly differently, as if it was more embedded into the way the phone works.

  • On the SE, you take your photo, exit the camera, open the Shozu app, select the image you want to upload, tag (if you want to) and hit upload.
  • The Nokia series 60 version can do all this plus, as soon as you have taken the photo (with out exiting the photo app) you can use the contextual menu to send it direct to your photo sharing site … brilliant.
