Music as a defence system - more commuter observations

In an update to a previous post I should have also said that it is increasingly noticeable that the best method of keeping yourself to yourself on the commute is to be wearing your headphones. Obviously the most noticeable are the Ipod ‘mug-me’ white ones and their copies.

Nothing says leave me alone like – I have my music and you are not going to interfere

On sound as a weapon – not much apart from some references to a research program in Germany during WWII

And reference to a non-lethal sound based weapon being used in Israel

more sound or sonar stuff on Wikipedia, especially the bit about sonar being able to kill or disorientate sea mammals.

Comment

  1. Sound was also used pre WW2 passively: the sound mirrors along the UK’s south coast were intended to detect the approach of enemy aircraft, but they were made osbolete by radar in the mid 30s. And they look really cool.

And how many of us have ever used our iPods or mobiles “passively”? – merely pretending to have music on, or to be on a call, in order to avoid unwanted social interaction.
